WWI Day - Historical Society

8th November 2024

We were once again privileged to have Clive and Peter from the Sampford Peverell Society come in to help us deepen our knowledge of Sampford Peverell village during World War I. In Cedar Class the children learnt about what the children at Sampford would have played with over a hundred years ago and made comparisons to the toys that they play with now. In Beech the children investigated what Sampford Peverell was like in regards to the shops which used to be in the village and the habits of the visitors - answering questions like: Why were there so many more shops in Sampford compared to today? They also looked at how the old money system worked before decimalisation. In Ash, the Year 5 and 6 children make links to the poetry of the WWI poets they had investigated earlier in the week to what life was like for soldiers during the conflict; they were then matched with a fallen soldier who came from the village. The spiritual connection that the children made with themselves and these young men who died was poignant and meaningful and culminated in them preparing a remembrance cross which they laid in the Garden of Remembrance at the church.

We were also joined by Keith Astbury of the Royal British Legion who helped deliver our Remembrance Service alongside the children and Reverend Christopher.
