Computing Curriculum

At our school we want pupils of Sampford Peverell CofE Primary School to have a healthy and positive relationship with technology. Technology is everywhere and we are aware of what a major part it will play in our pupils’ lives. To do this, we will teach our pupils how to use technology in a positive, responsible and safe manner. We want our pupils to be creators - not just consumers - and the curriculum we have created covers the three main areas of computing: computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Understanding that there is always a choice when using technology is important to us, so as a school we will utilise technology to model positive use. Many issues which arise with computing can be best prevented with clear education. Technology has proven to be a fantastic way for the children to communicate their ideas and to present their work to others. Our knowledge rich curriculum has to be balanced with the opportunity for pupils to apply their knowledge creatively which will in turn help our pupils become skilful computer scientists. We encourage staff to try and embed computing across the whole curriculum to make learning creative and accessible. We want our pupils to be fluent with a range of tools to best express their understanding and hope by Upper Key Stage 2, children have the independence and confidence to choose the best tool to fulfil the task and challenge set by teachers.

We currently are using a scheme of work called ‘Teach Computing’ which ensures that we cover each element of the computing curriculum; it follows ‘spiral curriculum’ which means that each of the themes are revisited regularly. This style of curriculum design reduces the amount of knowledge lost through forgetting, as topics are revisited yearly.

Each child has their own Office 365 account which allows them to access online software and save their work to their own One Drive. This means that children are able to use the software available to create, research and communicate across all the areas of the computing curriculum and access it both in school and at home.

We want the children in our school to enjoy and value computing and leave the school with a firm grasp of all the elements of the curriculum. We investigate the ‘why’ behind their learning and not just the ‘how’. We want our pupils to have open discussion, reflect on what they know or have learnt and to appreciate the impact computing has on their learning, development and well-being. Balancing the use of technology is so important to an effective education and a healthy life-style. We feel that the way in which we implement our computing curriculum helps children realise the need for the right balance and one they can continue to build on in their next stage of education and beyond. The best way to view the impact of our curriculum we deliver is in the pupils’ own work where they showcase all of the skills and knowledge that they have. All pupil will show this on their Office 365 account – where their work will be saved in their own One Drive. Moving forward in life, we feel that by presenting, accessing and saving their work online is a definite skill for their futures.
