Art Curriculum
At Sampford Peverell School we highly value the positive development that the arts can have on children’s lives academically, practically, emotionally and spiritually. Through the arts, we intend for the children to develop critical and creative skills, learn to challenge themselves, communicate their thinking, expand imagination, express emotions, nurture identity and embrace their own creative style. We aim to nurture an enjoyment and a respect for art and throughout their time at our school; our intention is to enhance knowledge and understanding of the arts and artists and their role in culture and history. We enable children to develop ideas, master techniques and take inspiration from the Greats. We want our children to be inspired by the arts and gain a lifelong interest whilst fulfilling their own creative potential.
The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Sampford Peverell C of E School fulfils and exceeds the National Curriculum whilst demonstrating progression and where possible, links to school and class topics. Our children develop their ideas and show age appropriate understanding of how ideas are developed through artistic processes because teachers focus on and model skills. With an emphasis on critical discussion in lessons, students expand their artistic vocabulary whilst mastering techniques and clearly communicate their ideas and understanding. Children have weekly lessons where they have the opportunity to develop ideas, master techniques and take inspiration from the great artists and designers. The Arts Award is a national accredited scheme and from Year 1 all children in our school take part in this scheme during their time with us. We blend the scheme into our curriculum and use art lessons, art clubs and art events as evidence for our award. Our wider community is very special to us and we have several art volunteers as well as weekly visits from the Devon lace teachers whose sessions are always very popular and have allowed our children to develop specific traditional skills.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials. They are given opportunities to learn to discover, explore and respond to a variety of different materials and media, colour, texture and shape. In Key Stage 1 pupils are taught to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products. They learn to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. Using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space they develop a wide range of art and design techniques. The work of famous local, national and international artists and designers are explored to enhance their learning and inspire their creative style. We are extremely lucky to have a long standing connection with the Devon Lace Teachers who come and work with the children weekly.
In Key Stage 2, pupils are taught to develop artistic techniques, and control of their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. Pupils are taught to create sketchbooks, to record their observations and to review and revisit ideas. Pupils are given opportunities to improve their mastery of art and design techniques using drawing, painting and sculpture with a growing range of materials. Great artists, architects and designers in history are studied to see the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines. Creating new work inspired by the greats the pupils are able to make links to their own work.
Our school is a registered Arts Award Centre with a rare 100% pass rate at Discover, Explore and Bronze level. Through on-going monitoring of children's understanding, knowledge and skills, we are able to differentiate, support and challenge the children and the impact is that all learners express themselves to the best of their ability in their artwork. Our children know that they can celebrate their artistic achievements, as there are class displays, school displays and events showcasing their work.
At the end of each term we have an arts event open to the wider community; for example at the end of the spring term, the children were given an opportunity to showcase their music abilities. We have an annual school play at the end of each summer term. Children are not only involved in the drama and singing but in scene construction, prop making and costume design. This shows the impact of years of learning artistic skills and nurturing their ideas.
We celebrate our artistic achievements in local newspapers, and our Parish News. We take advantage of local community events and annually take part in the annual lantern parade, local town remembrance art displays and local village events. Previously we have visited galleries, interviewed actors and authors and have welcomed visiting musicians to the school. This creates an atmosphere of motivation and excitement around the subject that inspires a real love for the arts.
Through the Arts Award process children develop their creative voice. They are able to give peer reviews, articulate critical responses to their own and others work. They are engaged, proficient and motivated in their art work and we hope that they continue to carry on this enthusiasm throughout their secondary school life and beyond.

James H won the competition to design a Christmas Card for the local MP - December 2022
Beau, Joe, Ezio, Annabel, Evelyn, Orion, Freddie and Laurel - all received prizes in the Mid Devon Show Art Competition - July 2022
Louis won a reconditioned bike in the 7-10 age group of the Sustainable Tiverton Net Zero Art Competition. In the same competition Theo was runner up, Oscar G was 3rd place. George H and Henry were commended - January 2021
